What to expect?
In October, pupils are invited to read the six shortlisted books and judge which one they consider to be the best. The Awards are open to all in years 7 to 9.
To launch the Awards, we are given 1 or 2 pages of the first chapter as drama script of each of the shortlisted books, so the pupils get a taster of what the books are about before they choose their first book to read.
In January, the company Into Films, holds 2 animation workshops , the first one being an introduction to animation in all forms and second workshop is the practical elements for pupils to work on their skills towards entering the Best Book Trailer Award – these need to be booked early as the spaces are limited.

Within the awards pupils can win prizes and here are the nominated categories:-
Book of the year:- shortlist of six titles from newly published fiction for young people. The Winner will be selected via a voting system where the participating pupils select their favourite book.
Most Innovative School: Schools can submit a statement describing innovative ways that your school has implemented the Juniper Book Awards.
Best Creative Award:- Awarded to an individual/group of pupils for the best creative idea linked to one of the shortlisted books. Entries can include for example of music, dance, live action-drama video, poetry or art.
Book Trailer:- Schools create a video trailer for the book of their choice. Juniper Education Resources work closely with IntoFilm who decide on the winning entries.
Best Pupil’s Reviews :- All pupils review the books they have read and submit to Mrs Lock and then sent to the Judges at Juniper to find out who wrote the year’s best review

Yoto Carnegie Greenaway Awards
Every spring, CILIP invites reading groups in libraries and schools, to get children and young people, involved with reading the books from this prestigious award.
The young people taking part are known as ‘shadowers’ as they ‘shadow’ the judging process for the Yoto Carnegie Medals; they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist, engage in reading related activity which they can share online, and vote for their favourites to win the Shadowers’ Choice Awards.
Reading activity takes place from the moment that the shortlists are revealed in March each year. The shadowing process is supported by promotional and educational materials supplied online. Groups can download publicity materials that include posters, bookmarks, stickers and activities to promote shadowing across your school or library and access reading resources created for each shortlisted title.
At HACH the books are then debated with other students from schools in the Thurrock area and culminates in a visit to the Thameside Theatre, where they can present their views on which books the enjoyed and more importantly, why the think the book they are championing will win the Award.
The Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration, formerly known as the Kate Greenaway Medal, was established in 1955, and is awarded annually to a children’s book illustrator whose artwork creates an outstanding reading experience.
By uniting the Medals for Writing and Illustration under The Carnegies name, the awards are able to more strongly emphasise our library-led origins and champion the central role of libraries and librarians in the awards.
Key Dates for the Yoto Carnegies 2023
15 February 2023: 2023 Longlist announcement
17 March 2023: 2023 Shortlist announcement and Shadowing begins
May 2023: Shadowers’ Choice Voting opens. Exact dates to be announced.
21 June 2023: Medal and Shadowers’ Choice Award Winners announced. Exact date to be announced later this year
Reading Champions is a national reading campaign that supports and celebrates reading culture within schools.
The quiz allows keen readers, aged between 10-14 years, to become part of a team, represent their school in a national competition and have a chance to really shine. It celebrates libraries and librarians and brings great excitement and drama to the wonderful world of reading.
How to Join in
Teams consist of four students (plus a reserve.) open to KS2/KS3 (yr6 – yr9)

Dates and structure
November we start with the knock-out rounds to find the best quizzers for the school team. Regional heats take place end of February beginning of March – our regional heat is the Thames Gateway which includes schools in Essex, Kent and in London with an E Code. The grand final will take place in London sometime in June and is scheduled to be a live event.
Why participate in the Quiz?
The quiz aims to celebrate all reading, giving readers a chance to shine
The Quiz has 8 categories and 10 questions in each. The questions can range from Classic books to Nursery Rhymes to Comic characters to Classic books.
Although very challenging, all our students who take part have described it as exciting and that they rarely get the chance to use their wide reading knowledge in competition against other schools in this way. These moments give pupils a chance to shine and to feel more confident, plus boosting their self -esteem.
Last year HACH won their heat which was the Thameside Gateway and East London region and there were 25 schools plus us who took part. We then went to London in May to the Grand Final and considering there were over 2000 students who took part, we came 10th overall, which is a fantastic achievement for a state school.

Stan Lee Excelsior Book Award
The Excelsior Award is the only fully independent, nationwide book award for graphic novels and manga - where kids aged 9-18 decide the winner (via four age-appropriate categories) by rating each book as they read it!
This is a scheme to encourage reading for pleasure amongst children and teenagers, but also to raise the profile of the merits of graphic novels and manga books as a storytelling medium in education. The basic premise is that all the schools participating encourage their students to read the shortlisted books and then fill out the rating form. This allows the student to rate and review the book by giving it marks out of 5, according to Story, Artwork, Characters and Dialogue, over a 9-10 week period. The winning titles are announced at a special awards ceremony in June.
